September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance
The New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service, which is part of the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism, within the Department of State, received a grant from the national AmeriCorps program to develop service events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The lead agencies for the service projects are:

Jersey Cares
Jersey Cares anticipates 1,000 volunteers to serve between September 8 and 11 on a range of service projects, with a signature event at the NJ Veterans Home at Menlo Park. The volunteers will assist the veterans and develop memorial gardens and building of benches for future visitors to reflect on 9/11. Contact: Brian Dean, Jersey Cares (973) 424-1091 bdean@jerseycares.org

New Jersey State Museum
The Museum will have a year-long exhibit, “Remembering 9/11: Reflections and Memorial,” that includes four conversations for the public. The Museum will focus one of the conversations on service and will include AmeriCorps members. The Friends of the State Museum will also support city-wide service events on September 11th organized by the Trenton Downtown Association. Contact: Contact: Anthony Gardner, NJ State Museum (984-3899) anthony.gardner@sos.state.nj.us

Paterson Community Schools AmeriCorps program
AmeriCorps members will engage 100 volunteers in four beautification projects in Paterson’s community schools neighborhood. They will paint 6 murals (2 at each school) that commemorate the national day of service and promote the spirit of tolerance and unity that strengthen America. The fourth site will do a community clean-up and beautification at their new community garden. Contact: Mike Gowdy (973) 413-1602, mgowdy@njcdc.org

The Salvation Army of Newark AmeriCorps program
The Salvation Army of Neward will honor First Responders who were directly affected by the events of September 11th. On September 8 they will host a luncheon that will feature a presentation by Brenda Beavers of the State Salvation Army, who is nationally recognized for her work on emergency response in the aftermath of the attacks and who led NJ’s Inter-faith Long Term Response efforts. Contact: Drew Grisham, Salvation Army, (973) 623-5959. Drew.grisham@USE.SalvationArmy.org

The Montclair State University and Bonner AmeriCorps programs
will partner for outdoor beautification service events at Liberty Science Center, food collection and delivery, and beautification events at local schools. Contact: Krystal Woolston (973) 655-4268. Woolstonk@mail.montclair.edu

Ground Zero Flag closing ceremony/flag folding
Possibly on or soon after September 17, 2011
116 Mott Street (corner of Hester) will be taking place approximately 2 weeks from when it was unfurled. The date is yet TBD due to explanation in the first entry of the calendar. Confirmed dates will be posted on their website listed below. If you've never been part of this very touching patriotic event, consider participating this year. When the flag is folded, the streets are blocked so the community can come together with the 9/11 responders/volunteers and perform the official military fold. The event coincides with the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy, so many neighbours and visitors participate in the folding. View photos from past events and get a history of the tradition as well as updated info by going to www.thegroundzeroflag.com. Also check out www.24-7.com and click4good, where every time you use either of these, a percentage goes to the Ground Zero Flag, a 9/11 charity, or charity of your choice.
